dc.description ABSTRACT This dissertation analyzes the role played by the judiciary in combating corruption in Tanzania. The data collected reveals the increase of corruption at an alarming rate especially in the public institutions, a situation which is shocking and needs redress from the judiciary as one of the enforcement machinery in combating corruption. Different reasons have been cited and found to be the causes of corruption which include greed and selfishness, poor leadership, lack of transparency, impacts of colonialism, nepotism, globalization, weak judicial system, and uncommitted institutions to fight against corruption, long bureaucratic procedures and legal compliance framework. The study was interested in analyzing the role played by the judiciary in combating corruption in Tanzania as well as the problems that hinder the judiciary to perform its roles and solutions thereof. Data from books, reports and journal articles were used in assessing the state, causes and factors hindering the judiciary to perform the role of combating corruption. Interviews and questionnaires were also employed to obtain information from the respondents who work in the judiciary on the role the judiciary plays in combating corruption. xv The researcher has therefore made conclusions that the judiciary is an important organ in the fight against corruption. It was hence recommended that the government improve the working conditions of the judiciary and the judiciary to expunge itself from corrupt activities.
