This study investigated the Influence of Privatization of Higher Education on Students’ Equitable Access to Higher Education: A case of St. Augustine University of Tanzania (SAUT), Main Campus Mwanza. The study sought to achieve four specific objectives which were: to find out how enrollment to SAUT has increased since its establishment in 1998; to examine the strategies that SAUT employs to increase access to higher education; to explore challenges that SAUT faces in its endeavor to increase equitable access to higher education; and to identify ways that might be used to enhance equitable access to higher education Institutions. The study was conducted at SAUT, Mwanza main campus and mixed research approach was used. The total number of respondents was 99 including 6 staff and 93 students who were sampled using purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Interview, questionnaires, documentary review and focus group discussion were used as instruments in the study for data collection. Findings from the study show that in general people acquire knowledge through different opportunities that appear in their lives due to the aspect of poverty in our country. The emergence of privatization of higher education had brought many far from where they were before. Findings show that there is a possibility for getting equitable access to higher education if somebody got informed about sponsorship and were aware of higher educational policy that had helped many universities and other tertiary institutions to be opened all over the country. The findings have also revealed that there is an increasing number of students enrolled every year because of different strategies used by the private universities to tap the students. The study recommends that both public and private sectors should work hand in hand to assure the equitability of access to higher education is provided to both kinds of people. Although it can be observed that by now many are getting education, but there are lots of people who are in great need of getting education but they don’t have that access. So the government should think about it so as to provide big number of educated people who may work for the benefit of both, the country and individuals.
