This study investigated the influence of parental involvement on academic
performance among public secondary school students at Shinyanga Municipality in
Shinyanga region. It specifically investigated ways parents are involved in students’
education, challenges facing parental involvement in public secondary schools and the
measures to be taken to promote parental involvement in public secondary schools at
Shinyanga Municipality. The study employed mixed research approach and
convergent parallel design. Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics
with the help of SPSS version 20 and were presented in tables, frequencies and
percentage while the qualitative data were analysed thematically and presented in
narrative forms. The findings of the study showed that parents are involved through
school meetings, participating in different school contributions as well as participating
in construction activities. It further demonstrated that negative perceptions towards
education, language factor, limited time and illiteracy to some parents were the
challenges facing parental involvement. The study recommends that the Government
through the Ministry of Education should provide regular seminars to parents and the
community at large on the importance of parental involvement. Also, there should be
recognition and awards to parents whose children perform well in examinations and
teachers should be trained on how to deal with parents when they visit schools.
However, introduction of serious Parent Teacher Association will be helpful to ensure
parental involvement is successfully practised. |
