Description:
The aim of this study was to investigate the Effects of Visual Aids on Enhancing Teaching
and Learning Process in Public Secondary Schools in Ilemela Municipality, Tanzania. The
study was guided by four specific objectives; to describe visual aids used by teachers
during teaching and learning process, to find out the views of teachers and students about
the effects of using visual aids in teaching and learning process, to determine the extent to
which teachers use visual aids during teaching and learning process, and to describe the
attitudes of teachers and students regarding the use of visual aids in teaching and learning
process. The study was guided by Instructional Theory by Skinner (1974). A mixed
research approach was employed under which the convergent parallel research design was
used. A sample size of 111 participants were selected including students, teachers, school
academic masters, heads of schools and school quality assurance officers were involved in
order to provide required information. Data were collected through questionnaires and
interview guide. The quantitative data was analysed through SPSS version 20 and
qualitative data was analysed through thematic analysis. The findings showed that teachers
had the tendency of ignoring the uses of visual aids in teaching and learning process. This
study concluded that the use of visual aids in teaching and learning process is very
important because it simplifies the teaching and learning process. It is recommended that
MoEST should provide enough materials for preparing visual aids, to provide seminars and
training to teachers for preparation and usage of visual aids.
