dc.description The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of local government in improving the quality of education in public secondary schools in Ukererwe district. A mixed research approach which adopted triangulations design was used for this study. Data was collected through interview and questionnaires both open and closed ended. The participants included teachers, heads of schools, district secondary education officer, district executive director Council chairperson of the council and parents. A total of 153 respondents were involved in this study. The findings showed that the local government in Ukerewe is making some efforts in improving quality of education. The efforts include close follow-up of what is happening on the schools and purchasing learning materials. The study also found out that community response to the local government efforts is low. Likewise, the study found out that the local government in Ukerewe is encountering some challenges in improving quality of education. Among the challenges are: political influence, poor participation of community in improving infrastructure, economic constrain of the community, shortage of science teachers, inadequate teaching and learning materials as well as school infrastructures particularly laboratories and libraries. The study recommends that the local government in Ukerewe should increase funding for the improvement of the learning environment; hire more science teachers and give motivation to teachers. The school management should be close to parents so as to be able to get assistance. The community should participate in education development at their areas and politicians should also use their power to mobilize the community to participate in education development.
