The purpose of the study was to investigate Day secondary school leadership and
students’ learning environment in Kwimba district. Specifically, the study aimed at
identifying day secondary secondary school heads’ management practices, academic
activities that day secondary school heads participate to improve the learning
environment and assessing appropriate strategies that could influence learning
environment for students in kwimba district. The research used mixed method research
approach which comprises qualitative and quantitative. Ex post facto research design as
nonexperimental applied that led to devide the respondents into two groups treatment and
control. Control group has got standards and treatment group learn from the control
group. The total number of respondents were 376. There was students, teachers, heads of
school and district secondary education officer (DSEO). The data was collected by using
questionnaires and anlysed by using SPSS (statistical package for social sciences
software) version 16. The quantitative data was tested by using Chi-square and ANOVA.
Qualitative data (interviews) was analyzed by narration. The findings showed that day
secondary school heads maintained students and teachers discipline, follow up on
students attendance, good relationship with the community, acdemic resources for
positive learning environment for students. But, there were challenges such as provision
of lunch and hostels for students at their schools. Therefore heads of schools in
cooperation with the government, teachers’ houses, hostels, laboratories, libraries,
classrooms, enough teachers, good relationship with the commuinty should be maintained
so as to improve learning environment for students for quality education.
