dc.description his study aimed to investigate the contribution of extracurricular activities on students’ holistic development in public secondary school in Missenyi District. The study was guided by three objectives; to investigate the roles of extracurricular activities on students’ holistic development, to explore the challenges facing the implementation of extracurricular activities in public secondary schools and to find out ways of improving the implementation of extracurricular activities in public secondary schools. Mixed research approach were employed using Cross-sectional research design with a sample of 199 respondents which included 1 District secondary education officer, 6 heads of school, 72 teachers and 120 students. The participant was selected by simple random sampling and purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, interview guide and document review. Quantitative data were analyzed through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and thematic coding was used to analyze qualitative data. The findings reveals that extracurricular activities develop students holistically through talents enhancement, physical fitness, increased creativity, develop skills, and students become well disciplined. Also the results show that, there were challenges faced in the implementation of extracurricular activities in schools which included low motivation, lack of qualified personnel, financial constraints, limited time as well as inadequate facilities. Finally, the study suggested that the government should provide enough fund, enough time, skilled personnel, and motivation to enhance effective implementation of extracurricular activities in public secondary schools.
