Description:
This study aimed at exploring the contribution of teacher-school head relationship on job
commitment in public secondary schools in Kasulu Town Council. The study employed
mixed approach and a convergent parallel design. The participants involved in this study
were 80 teachers and 4 heads of schools making a total of 84 participants. Data were
collected through questionnaires and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using
Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS) version 20 while qualitative data were
analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings of the study revealed that positive
relationship between teachers and school head contribute significantly on teachers’ job
commitment. Also, it was indicated that little effort of the head of school in establishing
good relationship with staff members contribute to poor teacher job commitment. Apart
from that, some heads of schools who are trying to establish good relationships with
teachers face some challenges including unethical conduct of teachers, inadequate
teaching and learning materials and poor leadership skills. The study recommended that
in order to improve teachers’ job commitment, good relationship between teachers and
heads of schools should be established by providing frequent leadership workshops so
that to equip school heads with different leadership skills as well as provision of seminars
to teachers. Generally, in order to build a positive relationship between teachers and
heads of school the appointed heads of school should be encouraged to adopt different
leadership style by considering the present situation like maturation of teachers and level
of job commitment. Also teachers should observe teachers’ professional ethics so that
they can help them to behave in an expected manner.
