Education is an important aspect on the development of the country and it cannot be denied that the whole
process of education firstly needs professional teachers .Tanzania is now experiencing the downfall of the
teaching profession which ultimately affect teacher’s performance. In response to this current situation
there is a need of taking into consideration the attitude of teachers who are responsible in performing
different teaching responsibilities. It is at this dilemma, this study thought to identify the attitude of
secondary school teachers, its effect upon their performance and the way forward. The outset of the study
progressed from the background to the study where this gave an overview of the study. Chapter two was
developed into theoretical literature and empirical literature where this helped to identify the gap in
literature and the relationship of the literature to the study.
Triangulation mixed method design was used. The study was conducted at Butimba ward’s secondary
schools where the researcher ditributed 96 questionnaires to secondary school teachers and 120 Students
teachers from Butimba Teachers College , where 77 teachers returned the questionnaire and 112 student
teachers returned questionnaires Also the researcher conducted semi structured interviews with three
heads of schools. The questionnaire was piloted in order to test their validity and reliability. Data was
managed and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 20 with the help of software
and qualitative data was analyzed through explanations with some paraphrased and direct courtation from
the respondents.
Results indicated that most teachers holds negative attitude towards their profession which in turn affect
their everyday performance. The researcher also recommended for further study to be conducted using
more research instruments and design such as survey which is said to be good in behavioral studies. Also
the researcher recommended that in case of further study the study should cover large area and
population.
