The study appraises the implementation of guidance and counseling program on the
academic performance of selected high school students in Sengerema District. To
accomplish this work four research objectives guided the study as follow; to identify the
attitudes of students towards educational/career counseling in their schools, to determine
the professional qualifications of the teacher counselors handling guidance and
counseling programs in high schools; to examine academic performance among high
schools students in Sengerema district and to assess the intervention measures in handling
the challenges facing guidance and counseling programs in schools. . A total population
were 420, A sample size was 200 respondents was included 135, students, 60 were
teachers, 04 Heads of schools and 01 District education officer. However, the study
employed mixed research approaches that were the qualitative and quantitative approach.
Qualitative data can be analyzed quantitatively (Nuttal, Shankar & Beverland, 2011;
Atieno, 2009, p. 17. This study used triangulation research design whereby a researcher
collected both quantitative and qualitative data together and analysis was used including
questionnaires and guided interview.Moreover, the main findings of this study were;
schools take guidance and counselling seriously and are given for career/educational
guidance, students prefer to go to their parents for counselling, Support from the school
administration, guidance and counselling is not by competent teacher counsellor but also
other teachers, help students make good career choice for their future, restoring order and
discipline in the school, students academic performance increases due to guidance and
counselling. Moreover, the study revealed that among the measures to handle the
challenges facing guidance and counseling include, provision of training to teachers
counselor, provision of the needed resources for guidance and counseling, teachers
through their professional to advise students to be open towards their problems,
motivation to teachers counselor so that to handle students cases nicely. The study
concluded that guidance and counseling are crucial in high schools. Guidance and
counseling services offered in high schools of Sengerema involved educational guidance,
career guidance, and behavioral aspects. The headmaster is supposed to put much effort
in ensuring guidance and counseling so as to have students who are well disciplined and
can make their career choice for their future
