This study aimed on community and child-friendly learning environment in ward secondary
schools in Bukombe district. The objectives of the study were to examine the role of community
participation on creating child-friendly learning environment in ward secondary schools, to
assess if the local people understand the meaning of community participation in child-friendly
learning environment implementation process in ward secondary schools, to determine to what
extent and in which activities the local people participates in creating friendly learning
environment in ward secondary schools and also to examine the factors that influence local
people participate in the creation of friendly learning environment in ward secondary schools.
Explanatory sequential research design was used and a mixed approach adopted. The target
population was 248, 5 ward secondary schools registered in Bukombe district. A purposively
sampling technique was used for head of secondary schools, Village Executive Officer, Ward
Executive Officer, Ward Educational Coordinator and community members and simple
randomly selected 12 teachers from each of the schools as being representative of the target
population. Data collected by using the questionnaire and interview method. Quantitative data
was analyzed through the use of descriptive statistics which included frequencies and
percentages while the analyzed data was presented using SPSS and qualitative analyzed using
thematic analysis.
The study recommended that ward secondary school, community members and schools
administrators must be transparent in everything that concerning financial, progress of the
students, information to expose the community, teachers and students. Thus, help to bring sense
of togetherness within the community.
