dc.description This study explores the strategies to enhance learner academic performance in mathematics in secondary schools in Magu District. The research was guided by three objectives. The researcher adopted a qualitative approach to get in-depth information from the field. The study involved twenty-seven participants such as six head of schools, one District education officer and twenty students. The study employed purposive sampling technique to select heads of schools, students, and District Secondary Education Officer (DSEO) to get the right information. Data were collected through interviews and, focus group discussion. The findings from the study indicate that students view mathematics as a difficult subject, also mathematics teachers are few in secondary schools. Poor foundation on mathematics from primary schools, lack of teaching and learning materials, poor economy of some families, lack of provision of lunch in schools and negative attitudes of the students and the community, and long distance from home to school. The researcher recommends that the government should put more emphasis on mathematics subject to improve students’ performance. In addition, the researcher recommends that the government should cooperate with other education stakeholders such as parents, teachers, and educational curriculum developers in enhancing the performance in mathematics. Also, the researcher recommends that the government should employ enough mathematics teachers. Finally, the government should motivate the teachers by providing short courses, seminars, and workshops in mathematics; and provide good salaries, training and conducive working environments for teachers in secondary schools.
