The main objective of this study was to assess the status of career guidance and counseling programs for secondary school students in Missenyi district council. The population for the study was 22 public secondary schools in Missenyi district. The target population was 4390 people including, 22 head of schools, 22 career guidance and counseling teachers and 4346 form Three and Four students. A mixed research methods were employed. Explanatory design was used for the study. Stratified and Purposive sampling methods were used. The primary data was collected by the use of questionnaires and semi-structured interview schedule. The main finding of the study shows that, public schools had no clear, specific and planned programs for career guidance and counseling services while in private schools some programs existed, however various challenges including; inadequacy of career guidance and counseling resources and facilities, overloading of career guidance and counseling teachers with class work and inadequate up to date information on different careers for both students and teachers were identified as the hindering factors toward the effectiveness on the services provision. From the main research finding the study concluded that, the mode of career guidance and counseling services’ provision in public secondary schools in Missenyi district council is very poor as compared to the same in private schools where some planned programs existed. This study therefore recommends that, the government through MOEVT should assist public schools to come up with varied programs on career guidance and counseling. Teachers should be trained on career guidance and counseling to improve their competences by organizing in-service trainings, seminars and workshops. Finally the study suggested that, a study should be carried out on the status of career guidance and counseling programs for secondary school students in other districts of Kagera region or other regions of Tanzania so that generalization can be made
