dc.description This study investigated the factors affecting staff members‟ job performance in Higher Learning Institutions. The study was guided by the following objectives: To explore negative factors that affect staff members‟ job performance. To examine positive factors that influence staff members‟ job performance and to find out possible ways that can be used to enhance better staff members‟ job performance in higher learning institutions in Mwanza City. The study employed mixed research approach specifically used convergent parallel research design. The sample size was 104 participants, which obtained through simple random sampling (lottery) and purposive sampling. Qualitative information was obtained by using interview guide, data were analyzed through themes and narratives by making interpretation to bring the real meaning. Quantitative data was collected by using questionnaires and analyzed by using statistical measurements (inferential statistics) through Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS0 version 20 to draw conclusions. The results indicated that, limited fund, lack of promotion and motivation to the employees, low or inadequate salaries and unfriendly working environment were the factors that hinder staff‟ job performance. In addition, the provision of workers‟ social security, provision of seminars and workshops to the employees, Improvement of working conditions were the factors which positively affect job performance. Furthermore, the study revealed that, the possible ways to improve job performance were improvement of upwards communication enhance good relationship among employees themselves and increase of work facilities to the employees. Finally, the study recommended that, the government and the management in higher learning institutions should ensure they provide proper working climate.
