The importance of primary processing of coffee berries has attracted coffee farmers, processors, retailers and consumers. Thus quality and quantity both determine the price of coffee all over the world. In Tanzania, coffee regulatory authorities such Tanzania Coffee Board (TCB) and Tanzania Coffee Association (TCA) have been mobilizing farmers to use modern processing equipments to process their coffee so as to obtain better prices. Questionnaire, interview guide and observation as tools for data collection were applied during field survey. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) preceded by data coding to prepare data for easy entry. Data revealed that farmers understand the importance of primary processing for quality and price realization in the coffee industry. Home processing dominated among individual farmers while processing using CPUs were profoundly used in coffee estates, farmers groups and those associated with primary cooperative societies. However, capital constraints is a great obstacle to adopt modern processing facilities by the small scale coffee farmers. The use of the modern facilities (CPUs) to process coffee berries proved to bring good quality and higher prices in the market compared to the one processed using small pulping machines that are commonly used for home processed coffee beans. Further, CPUs have many other advantages like reducing processing time, time saving, limited water usage and the presence of more processing facilities. The study suggested further studies on primary processing of coffee berries for large scale coffee farmers who are more knowledgeable on CPUs. |
