The purpose of this study was to assess the role of local government authorities in provision of library resources in ward secondary schools in Temeke. The study had four objectives, namely. To provide an overview of the existing state of provision of library facilities in ward secondary schools in Temeke Municipality, to identify initiatives or approaches being taken by the Local government authorities in establishing libraries in secondary schools in Temeke Municipality. To assess the role of Temeke Local Government Authorities in provision of library facilities in secondary schools in Temeke Municipality and to identify challenges facing Local Government Authorities in provision of library resources in ward secondary schools in Temeke Municipality. A sample of 130 respondents was used and these were randomly obtained from the study area. The study employed data collection methods such as interviews, checklist, questionnaire, documentary review. The findings show that, ward secondary schools lacked proper library buildings, shortage of librarians, irrelevant and outdated materials. Also, with regard to the role of the local government authorities in provision of library resources it was found that local government involved stakeholders, provided reading materials and human resources. Moreover, the findings show that, local government authorities were facing different challenges in providing library facilities in ward secondary schools. Among the mentioned challenges were poor implementation of the policies, shortage of funds, political interference and lack of support from the community. The study recommends that, LGAs and other stakeholders, all together have to improve the library resources which include construction of library buildings, employing librarians, provision of reading materials, library furniture and provision of electricity to enhance performance of students in ward secondary schools. |
