The aspect this study is to assess the dowry system in Tanzania paid at the time of marriage between families involved. Also, this study is an attempt to fulfill the desire to shed light on the significance of dowry in Tanzania particularly in Karagwe district. In particular, the researcher examines how dowry in Karagwe district is significantly associated with better outcomes in terms of family wealth, particularly for physical assets and land. The instruments employed was based on formal and informal interviews, open-ended questionnaires, observations and documentary evidence in getting information on the dowry system in Tanzania particularly in Karagwe district. The data were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed, tables and percentages are used to display findings so as to reveal trends and patterns of relationships of data groups. The findings revealed that youths, particularly the girls, perceive the dowry system as offering the possibility of protection, release and status, in contrast to boys and other member of society who perceived as repressive, confining, and full of conflicts and violence and characterized by fractured affective ties. The narratives of the affection, security and opportunities for wholesome development appeared impossible the world of the home the world of the dowry system. We have to acknowledge our differences; a researcher thinks it‘s important for society to acknowledge they have different cultural nature, different ways of viewing things and different ways of solving problems. But once, those dissimilarities are on the table, don‘t harp on them. Instead, let us focus on what we are trying to accomplish together. |
