This study assessed the factors influencing teachers‘ turnover in public secondary
schools in Tanzania taking as a case of study of Mbozi district Council, Mbeya region.
The main goal was to determine the factors influencing teachers‘ turnover in public
secondary schools in Mbozi district council and to highlight the magnitude of teachers‘
turnover in public secondary schools in Mbozi district council in Tanzania. Methods of
Data collection used were interviews, questionnaire and direct observation of relevant
documents. A total of 91respondents were involved, including 6 key informants
representing Councilors and Mbozi district council employees. Data collected was
analyzed by a computer programme (Statistica Package for Social Scientist (SPSS). In
this analysis, data was cross-tabulated to produce percentages and frequencies of
responses on performance variables.
Based on the study it was found that low remuneration, poor working environment and
excessive bureaucracy in regard to permission for studies and transfers were among the
leading factors influencing secondary school teachers‘ turnover in public schools in
Mbozi district council. As a result the attainment of the intended goal of quality
education service delivery is not yet achieved properly.
The study therefore recommended that there should be a well designed motivation
policy as well as teachers performance tracking system to address all the above
mentioned issues and serious steps to be taken to minimize the turnover rate of teachers
in public secondary schools in Mbozi district council
