This study intended to examine domestic workers’ awareness on rights against labor exploitation by focusing on their knowledge, working conditions and major challenges facing them. The study was conducted in Dodoma city in two wards of Kikuyu North and Makulu. Data were collected through cross sectional survey by using interviews and questionnaires as tools for data collection. A Sample size of 78 respondents was employed, and they were selected by both probability and non-probability sampling techniques. Responses were coded and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS software Version 20).
Findings show that, majority of the respondents did not know whether there are rights abode to them whereby some of them had it that they have never heard about it. Along this, those who are aware of the rights abode to them, indicated that they had received the information from school, friends, media, Non-Governmental Organizations and by reading journals and posts. Furthermore, it was found out that, some of the domestic workers worked on monthly wages, whereas the rest worked as volunteers, in kind payment expectations as well as daily payment expectations. Nevertheless, the study found out that, majority of the domestic workers face challenges that include refusal to payment, refusal to annual leave, harassment especially beating, and denial to basic needs, working for long hours and sexual harassment.
From the findings above, the study recommends for various legal and policy interventions by the Government and the entire community, in order to make sure that challenges facing domestic workers are well addressed as far as their working rights and conditions are concerned. |
