Dissertation (MA Education)This dissertation, reports the findings of an investigation of parents’ involvement in managing students’ discipline in community secondary schools in Dodoma City Council. Specifically, the study examined the aspects through which school management involves parents in managing of the students discipline, challenges that school management has been facing in involving parents in disciplining students, and the measures taken to overcome the challenges that school managements face in involving parents in managing discipline of the students in community secondary schools. The study was guided by the School – Family – and Community Partnership Theory. The study employed mixed research approach where qualitative approach was largely used complemented by quantitative aspects to some extent. Cross sectional research design was employed to generate data from 180 respondents who included 100 parents, 40 students, 30 teachers 25 class teachers and five discipline teachers, five WEOS and five HOS. These respondents were obtained through random sampling and purposive sampling techniques. Furthermore, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, FGD and documentary reviews were the main instruments used to generate the data. The analysis revealed that parents were involved in different aspects to manage the discipline of the students. These include guiding students in proper and acceptable manner, attending parent school meetings, communication with the school, attending summons, assisting students in learning at home, and being involved in decision-making processes. However, the parents’ participation in managing the discipline of the students was not at a satisfying level. School management faced several challenges when involving parents in managing students’ discipline. These include lack of proper communication channels, insufficient information on the importance of involving parents in managing the discipline of the students, and parents’ low response in attending parent-school meetings. Based on the study findings, it is recommended that parents should play an active role by participating in managing the discipline of students by closely cooperating with the school managements.
