Various mental health programs are implemented to empower primary caregivers on how to manage mental ill patients at home. However literature has reported that caregivers demonstrate to have low knowledge on mental health, self-care practice and resilience on caring mental ill patients at home. Testing effectiveness of Orem,s Theory-based training for home- based mental health care on improving knowledge, self-care practices and resilience among primary caregivers of mental ill patients in Dodoma Tanzania. Study employed a sequential mixed design. Phenomenological study was used to explore qualitative data on existing strategies and challenges on caring mental ill patients experienced by 10 primary caregivers of mental ill patients. Interview guide was used to explore existing strategies and challenges on caring mental ill patients. Thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Uncontrolled quasi-experimental was used for managing quantitative data among 40 primary caregivers of mentally ill patients. Interviewer-administered structured questionnaires adopted from previous studies were used for data collection. Simple and multiple linear regressions were used to establish the association between variables. Thematic analysis showed that conversional measures were the existing strategies used by caregivers to care for mentally ill patients. The post-test findings indicated that there was significant mean score change on knowledge, self-care and resilience between baseline and end-line (p<0.05). The intervention was significantly effective on enhancing general mental health knowledge, self-care and resilience of primary caregivers. This study concludes that the integrated community-based education in Orem’s theory based is feasible and can enhance general knowledge, self-care practices and resilience among primary caregivers of mentally ill patient.
