dc.description Dissertation (MA Linguistics)
dc.description This study investigated the challenges of consecutive interpreting in My Love film, interpreted from English into Swahili. It, specifically, sought to identify challenges of consecutive interpreting in My Love film and to find out the impacts of the challenges of consecutive interpreting in My Love film from one language to another. The researcher, first watched My Love film thoroughly and then identified eighteen strings. The study employed 55 respondents as its sample size and used correlation qualitative design to compare the source text and target text and content analysis study by judging and identifying strings with the challenges and their impacts. The study used non-probability and probability sampling as well as simple random sampling technique in the sampling exercise. Data were collected through documentary review, questionnaires and interviews. The findings of the study revealed three things. First, it was discovered that there were challenges of consecutive interpreting including knowledge competence and experience challenges, linguistic and cultural competence challenges as well as challenges related to psychological activities. Second, it was, further, found that there were impacts related the above mentioned challenges. These were: mis-interpretation, over-interpretation, under-interpretation and inconsistent impacts. The study recommends that interpreters should be acquainted with effective strategies; including theories like Functional Equivalent Theory, Sense-based Theory and approaches of rendering a message from source language text to target language text in order to tranfer the message effectively and avoid distortion of meaning through over-interpretation, mis-interpretation and under-interpretation in TLT. They should be knowledgeable on the subject matters before embarking on interpretation. Furthermore, if there is no equivalent termonologies, it is advised that the interpreter should transfer the items as they are to the TLT in order to avoid distortion of meaning.
