The study aimed at examining challenges facing English language teachers in their process of preparation and utilization of Instructional Media in Wete district primary schools. It focused on primary schools due to the fact that instructional media are mainly needed in elementary knowledge for vocabulary gaining and enabling lower level learners to use language communicatively in their surroundings in all walks of life. A total of 73 respondents participated in giving the required information of the study and a total of 14 primary schools were visited during data collection. Instruments used in data collection included questionnaires, non-participant observation, interviews and documentary review.
The study used both descriptive and quantitative methods in analyzing and computing the gathered data.
The findings revealed that multi-responsibility among teachers, time constraints, insufficient funds, lack of classroom connectivity, insufficient infrastructures, overcrowded classes, religious beliefs, as well as low exposure to the advancement of science and technology which go together with innovation in modern teaching aids among teachers were found to be key challenges facing English language teachers in preparation and utilization of instructional media in the area of the study.
The study proposes corrective measures in order to overcome the challenges revealed in the study. The measures being proposed include the provision of frequent training to primary school English teachers, major rehabilitation to be done for school buildings and other school infrastructures. |
