dc.descriptionThe main objective of the study was to examine the contribution of NGOs towards improving the living standards of the local communities. The study was conducted at Bwembwera Area Development Programme (ADP) in Muheza District. The research used a case study approach and collected data using interviews and documentary evidence. Participants involved in the study were ADP staff, teachers, peasants, village executive officers and health officers. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The findings of this research show that the NGOs contribute towards improving the living standards of the local communities. These have been achieved due to the supports provided by NGOs such as financial assistance, guidance and counseling, technical supports and training channeled through the socio-economic projects. The socio- economic projects resulted in the majority local communities being able to access safe and clean water, improved education services, increased income for individual community members and decreased HIV AIDS cases. However in other places where there were no NGOs the socio economic services remained unchanged. The study recommends that since NGOs have a significant role and contribution in society; the Government should create a conducive and enabling environment to ensure that NGO’s potentials are fully utilized.
