Fleet management is among the oldest concepts in the world, the idea of fleet management was first incepted in the 1970s when most companies , institutes as well as Governments started using motor vehicles for the purpose of easing transportation. The main objective of this study is to assess motor vehicle fleet management in public institution in Tanzania, A case of Ministry of Finance and Planning. The study was guided by four objectives which were; assessing the policies and regulations affecting fleet management system in public institutions, examining the institutional management support affecting fleet management system in public institutions, the availability of financial budget affecting fleet management system in public institutions and identifying stakeholders awareness and compliance of fleet management systems in the public sector. The sample sizes of 101 respondents were recruited through purposive sampling techniques. Data was prepared and tested its scales by using factor analysis and later on analyzed by using simple regression analysis to test relationship among variables. Based on study findings, it is logical to conclude that effective fleet management in public institutions in Tanzania can be enhanced. Given the fact that fleet management in public institutions it has been performed in a way of improvement. The formulated legal policies are crucial supportive to the fleet management, hence there are rules and regulations on fleet management include Public Finance Act of 2001, the Local Government Act of 1984, the Guidelines on Government Assets Management and government directives which are used on fleet management. It has been found that the Institutional management support have a positive influence towards fleet management. Moreover due to the findings from the study has been revealed that government normally prepares financial support as proposed on the budget which facilitates wholly operating activities of fleets at MoFP. Furthermore, the findings show that operation activities and management activities at MoFP are conducted and executed by skilled trained and effective personnel governing the fleet management.
