dc.description | The major aim of this study was to investigate the influence of teaching and learning facilities on student‟s academic performance. The main focus was on: classrooms, libraries and laboratories. The study also sought to investigate the influence of classroom environment, laboratory services and library services on student‟s academic performance. The study employed mixed research approach where by both qualitative and quantitative approach were used interchangeably. Convergent parallel research design was employed. The data for this study were collected from the District Education Officer, Heads of Schools, teachers and students. The data were obtained through questionnaires, interviews and observation. The collected data were then analyzed statistically as well as descriptively. The findings of this study revealed that majority of public secondary schools have inadequate number of classrooms and classroom facilities; this situation causes overcrowding of students in a single class. Moreover, the findings revealed that many schools have laboratory buildings but there are inadequate equipment. Additionally, the study revealed that there are very few schools which have proper libraries. Teaching and learning facilities have much influence on student‟s academic performance as they act as a catalyst in the process of teaching and learning. Teaching and learning facilities, when effectively used by both teachers and students, can bring about positive effect to students in schools if they are available. Therefore, it is necessary for the government to make sure that there are adequate teaching and learning facilities in each school so as to improve academic performance of students. Parents too, should be involved in the welfare pertaining to school facilities. | |
