dc.description | Poverty is more severe in Tanzania rural areas than in urban areas. Almost 70% of Tanzanian lives in rural areas and their main economic activity is agriculture. Tourism is emerging as important sector in Tanzania economic activity after Agriculture. Pro-poor tourism is the type of tourism that aims to increase the net benefits for the poor or people marginalized in tourism industry, and ensure that tourism growth contributes to poverty reduction. Although the primary benefits of pro-poor tourism are economic gain its secondary benefits might be social, environmental or cultural. There are many forms of pro-poor tourism at a given destinations: they depends on several factors including the natural resource available, tourist demands, innovations and creativity, cultural and arts aspects of local people and geographical location of an area. In Tanzania we have a number of pro-poor tourism types that are in practice. This year Tanzania attained a middle-income status, and it is forecasted that tourism is going to be the fulcrum of sustainable economic activities which could fasten economic growth, promote additional productive jobs, more fiscal revenues, additional foreign exchange earnings and poverty reduction in the country. The aim of this paper is to review these pro-tourism types in Tanzania and their impacts in poverty reduction. | |
