| dc.description | The objective of this study was to explore the factors which hindered poverty reduction among the communities adjacent to tourism attractions and suggest measures to be taken to reduce poverty. Semi-structured interview, focus group discussions and observation methods, were employed to collect information from the respondents residing in Mang‘ula B, Kanyenja and Mshikamano villages, in Kilombero district in Morogoro region. Data collected were analysed qualitatively. The study findings indicated that, majority of the villagers could see the benefits in terms of improvement of the social services. These benefits include the supply of fresh water and rehabilitation of schools and dispensary. However, findings have shown that, the direct economic impact at the individual level was very low, apart from that, villagers did not engage themselves in tourism activities as their source of income due to a low level of education and awareness about advantages of tourism, bureaucracy and limited financial resources. The study concludes that, tourism attractions can improve the economy of individual villagers lived adjacent to the tourism attractions if they are directly involved in tourism activities. | |
