dc.description | This study intended to determine the contribution of SLEM-PROGRAM to the growth of Small firms in Mwanza region for the period 2008-2011-A case study in Misungwi district. The objective of the study was to find out whether SLEM was performing as per its expectation of ensuring that there is broad base enterprise growth in terms of real, sales and employment creation. The methods of data collection were face to face interviews, documentary content analysis and observation. Sampling techniques used was proportional stratified sampling whereby each sample size was used proportional to the stratum size. And in our study a sample size was sixty (60) firms. And methods of data analysis were statistical measures. The study found out the following: SLEM beneficiaries were performing well in terms of real income. All the clusters studied were growing at an average rate of 11.6% per annum. Furthermore the study revealed that SLEM has contributed in the creation of 108 employments for the period 208 - 2011 which means that for every year, 3 employments were generated through MSMEs. Also this study found that MSMEs were not benefiting from the operations of BDS because our study discovered that number of BDS visitors has been declining at an average percentage of 41.1 annually. Also the study has been revealed that loans have contributed towards the growth of production turnover of MSMEs. Because this study revealed that every shilling provided as loan to MSMEs was resulting into about two shillings. Finally the study suggested that repayment period should be extended from six months to one year. Also SLEM should employ adequate staff who can attend to all clusters and be present at all times to the BDS | |
