In recent years, there have been great campaigns in supporting the introduction and development of the entrepreneurship activities in the country with the recognition of SMEs as the vital sector for economic and social development to both individuals and the nation at large. The study aimed to assess the contribution of ICT to the development of micro entrepreneurs in managing their business ventures in Dar es Salaam a case of Ilala.
One hundred and thirty seven SMEs and fifteen officials from TCCIA branches as key informants were interviewed and given structured questionnaire which were collected back for analysis.
Literature review focused on the benefits associated with the adoption of information and communication Technology ICT by the small and medium enterprises SMEs in developed to developing economies, Tanzania being among them.
The study revealed a number of benefits and barriers to the growth and development of SMEs Operators. Some of the benefits are increase sales, business performance while on the other hand barriers include Lack of access to ICT facilities due to high setup cost, lack of knowledge and expertise on all ICT aspects, slow paced adoption and use of poor quality ICTs that are outdated, ineffective and inefficient. They are likely to have a limited availability of resources in terms of time, money and expertise, poor IT business knowledge and skills and finally inadequate scientific marketing techniques to retain customers.
The study concludes with recommendations for creating, enabling and providing viable environment for the growth and development of SMEs business, such as of set up of ICT strategies and align it with their business strategies. |
