The study on challenges facing municipals in household’s waste management in Dar-es-Salaam was conducted at Kinondoni Municipality. The objectives of the study were: to determine the community’s perception towards the equipment used in waste collection; to examine the community’s capacity to pay for waste collection by service providers; to find out whether the community understands waste management-related policies and laws and; to identify the influence of road infrastructure on waste collection. A sample of 95 respondents was used, where questionnaires and in-depth interview were used to collect data. The study found that the equipment used in waste collection are very poor in terms of quality and the municipal has no capacity to effectively collect waste in different streets. It was also found that majority of the respondents are willing but not able to pay for waste collection. Moreover the study found that most respondents agreed that waste collection is their responsibility even though they do not understand well waste management policies and laws because they have been written in English. It was further found that majority of the respondents were of the view that an accessibility to an area has an influence on waste collection.
The study concludes that the instruments used by the council in collecting waste are of the low quality and in certain areas are not easily accessible. It is further concluded that community member are ready to pay for waste collection. The study recommended that equipment used in waste collection should be improved. Government may subsidize the council’s budget so that waste can be collected on daily basis. Waste management policies should be written in Kiswahili in order to reach a larger part of the community. Moreover, the use of ICT may be emphasized including improving the ICT skills of the community so that they can access various issues related to waste management. |
