The paper stresses on understanding factors affecting development of sunflower sub
sector in Tanzania particularly in Singida rural district, in Singida region.
sunflower is one of the most important crops in Singida in improving rural farmers‟
income. The study employed Multiple stage sampling procedure .Regardless the
government of Tanzania has been implementing various agricultural development
production as well as to enhance farmers‟ income. However, yet the results reveal
that the sunflower farming practices in the studied area are not well developed, low
prices received by farmers, poor market infrastructure such as processing facilities,
road facilities, poor contract entered middlemen and lack of market information by
farmers few farmers organization . Connection to that sunflower market is dominated
by traders. The common practice is for traders to buy the sunflower crop before the
harvest and ultimately farmers obtain low prices. This market practice seems to erode
a greater portion of market margin to the farmers and the study has shown that along
the sunflower value of chain farmers receive low profitability compare to the traders
and processors who earn high profit. It is therefore, recommended that the policy
maker should focus on development of sunflower sub sector in Tanzania in order to
promote the production. Contracting farming and formulation of farmers
organization should be encouraged to motivate and mobilize the farmers and earn
more profit to improve their livelihood. |
