The foremost objective of this study was to assess the contribution of business cluster
initiatives in the growth of Micro, Small and Medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Tanzania,
more specifically in Morogoro food processing cluster. Specifically the study aimed to
meet the following objectives; (1) to identify the initiatives that have been established
for the growth of the food cluster members; (2) to assess how the initiatives influence
the growth within the food processing cluster; and (3) to determine challenges that
constraint the growth of food processing cluster. Data collection was done using
structured questionnaire, of open and closed questions, to obtain quantitative and
qualitative data. Interviews were conducted with key informants to get important
information in the study area. Observation also was employed for eye witness. Data
analysis was based on descriptive statistics, frequency analysis and percentages using
SPSS and Microsoft excel. To present the data texts, Tables and Figures were used to
illustrate findings. From analysis the study found that various initiatives that had been
established by the cluster to ensure growth of MSMEs including sharing information
among cluster members through time to time seminars; market disclosure whereby each
firm seeks its own markets; customer attraction though mass media adverts; market
networking; establishment of the infrastructure for quality production; promoting
creativity among cluster members; and adoption of new technology and new skills. This
had resulted to increased new technological skills; new markets for the products; the
established infrastructures have eased the flow of the goods and services; and there has
been the improved quality of goods and services produced. The cluster was faced by
challenges including the financial constraints; poor accessibility of credit among cluster
members; poor information sharing and producing the same information; complicated
TBS marks and TFDA certifications; unavailable package facilities; and poor value
chain analysis. It was concluded that the cluster had made important initiatives that
ensured growth among cluster members despite a number of challenges. It was
recommended that there should be training for the cluster members, financial institutions
should extend services to the cluster in time and there should be an industry to
manufacture packages. |
