A research on the management of materials in private companies was done at Derm Electrics (T) Limited and 40 respondents participated. The main objective was to investigate the effectiveness of Material management \ practices. Specifically the study determined the effectiveness of procedures used for material management, identified factors affecting storage procedure implementation of material management and determined challenges faced by the company on course of managing materials.
Case study research design was employed and both primary and secondary data were collected primarily by means of interviews, observations and documentary review methods as well as instruments such as interview questions, questionnaires, observation schedule and documentary review schedule. Data was qualitatively analyzed using table and percentage to enable evaluation of the results.
Findings from this study revealed that the Derm Electrics complied with the requirement of management of materials. Challenges faced were on the procurement of materials to meet projects needs, the use of facilities and the use of technologies as well as training of employees to use facilities.
Recommendations include: The management to improve the material management techniques, follow material management procedure, the use of trained professionals to manage materials and employed/hire consultant for procurement plan and company budget as per nature of organization, a study to be done on the impact of poor storage system in private sector, effectiveness of procurement plan at private company and assessment of receiving and issuing of material in private sector.
