The study on SMEs and access to microfinance services was intended to assess SMEs and access of microfinance services, by investigating the barriers affecting SMEs in accessing microfinance services at FINCA. But specifically the study intended to identify microfinance services required by SMEs; to examine the SMEs barriers in accessing Microfinance service and to assess challenges face Microfinance Institutions in providing services to SMEs. The Study was conducted at FINCA Dar es salaam.
The study population was FINCA employees and clients who manage SMEs. The researcher included two FINCA branches. 20 employees’ respondent and 80 clients were taken in each FINCA branch that gives a total of 200 respondents. The study found that majority of the respondents (66.00%) were hindered by collateral in accessing loans services also the study found that majority of the respondents (72.00%) require loan services, finally it found that majority of the respondents (58.00%) revealed that lack of collateral is the strong challenge for SMEs owners to obtain loans from MFIs.
The study concluded that microfinance services under study are not sufficient. Therefore the following recommendations are made; efforts of Tanzanian Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) should be streamlined to meet the set standard. It should be noted that, extending credit alone is not sufficient condition to reduce SMEs challenges and improve productivity and income for small business owners in Tanzania. Therefore, additional intervention that goes hand in hand with micro financing should be implemented. Finally, training institutions should continue educating SMEs on relevant aspect that are of important to lenders. The researcher really hopes that, output from this study shall be of practical use to FINCA. |
