This study was designed to assess the challenges faced by petty women traders in conducting their businesses. The study was conducted at Himo in Kilimanjaro Region. The study used a sample of 80 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaire, in-depth interview and through observation. Secondary Data was also collected through review of documentary sources. The study found that at the junction where several buses and other means of transport pass, the availability of customers is high. This makes the traders to prefer conducting their business in those areas instead of conducting them at the market. It was also found that majority of petty traders have no capital thus are unable to conduct their business in the market where a structure is required to store the goods. Most of them lack collaterals that they can use to obtain loan from micro-financial institutions. Moreover, it was found that most of them are caretaker of their families. Thus, they are unable to stay for the whole day in the market place instead they prefer to sell their goods at the pick hours where the traffic is high. It was also found that most of them do not save whatever they get from their businesses instead they use it for family requirements. The study conclude that, majority of petty traders do not have capital that can enable them to conduct their businesses in a formal market. The study recommends that petty women traders form groups so that they can easily get assistance from various stakeholders. It is further recommended that petty women traders be trained in financial management to enable them to save whatever little they get from their businesses. |
