The study was taken place at Ilala Municipal Council, Dar es Salaam and the title was
“Assessing the role played by information technology in promoting SMEs: a case of
Ilala municipal council the main objective was to assess the role played by
information technology in promoting SMEs at IMC and for the case of specific
objectives the assessment based on the process of implementing information
technology in promoting SMEs at IMC, study the framework of information
technology in promoting SMEs at IMC and examination of the challenges of
information technology in promoting SMEs at IMC. For theoretical basis the
researcher passed through different literatures review, internet, previous report and
journals. The researcher used the descriptive research design; the sample of 50 in
number of the population was obtained through judgmental sampling technique. The
study data were obtained/collected by the use of interview, questionnaires and
documentary review and qualitative and quantitative technique were used to analyze
data. The study findings reveal that processes of implementing information
technology were followed. The existence of presence of preliminary control and
measures of performance of ICT usage, presence of evaluation of ICT performance,
presence of detailed monitoring and control of quality ICT usage and Involvement of
users in implementing of ICT were observed by the council. The study found that
framework on high management readiness was not well observed, advancement of
technology was not well reached to the extent to say advanced, the study showed
environment readiness and sound regulatory framework were well observed. The
challenges of information technology in relation to concerning with financial
resources required costs, skilled staffs’ members and quality assurance seems to be a
challenge. Finally, the study recommends that new and improvement of existing
policies should have touch on the improvement of the ICT over the SMEs
performance and the study should be used as the base or starting point for the polices
formulation. |
