The study employed explanatory research design method in conducting the research and a case study strategy on assessing the impact of leadership styles on succession plans in TBL, NHC and Vodacom. A sample of 102 respondents was used during data collection.
The study found out employees were aware of the succession plan concept and its practice and it was further revealed that all the three leadership styles that is transaction, transformational and democratic have influence on effective succession plan. However, transformational leadership style was seen as the most influential leadership style on an effective succession plan because of its intellectual inspiration and creation of creative leaders’ character; followed by democratic leadership style which is more of subordinates’ engagement and lastly transactional leadership a style with an appeal of creating followers than leaders and active only in the short run.
Implications of results were engagement of more people in the organization and increase in budgets so as to train extra potential leaders in all departments. Other researchers should research further on the influence of other leadership styles on effective succession plan.
