The major purpose of the study was to assess the influential factors in selecting a major bachelor degree course among students in higher learning institutions, based on Dar es Salaam Universities. The study covered 348 respondents who were students and staffs selected from different higher learning institutions in Dar es Salaam Region. The study employed descriptive research design and diagnostic research design in assessing the study problem. The data were collected using a questionnaire and interview. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation matrix analysis and binary logistic regression analysis.
The study observed that there are many factors towards student selecting a certain course over another course. The study shows that the influence of Family and Peer groups, Current career or employment opportunities, Personal Interest and Ambitions and Collage Career Guidance have significant positive effects on student selecting major bachelor degree in a higher learning institution based in Dar es Salaam Region.
The study recommends that the role of family, parents; schools and university should be widening student’s mind and views when they are in the process of selecting course to study in bachelor degree level so that they select courses which corresponds to the current market need as well as what they wish on doing on the future. The Government need to create awareness to students through special programs, after High school graduation seminars assisting them on their future career so that they could become responsible towards goal achieving.
