This study aimed at assessing the contribution of manufacturing industry towards
economic development in Tanzania. The study strived to achieve the following
specific objectives; to explore the impacts of the manufacturing industry on the
economic development of Tanzania, recognizing the main constraints facing
manufacturing industry in Tanzania and examining the government support towards
development of manufacturing industry in Tanzania.
The study is descriptive research in nature and employed cross-sectional research
design to gather useful information. The study used purposive sampling to get 94
respondents employees ofKansai Plascon Tanzania Limited. The study used mixed
research approach, collected primary data by using questionnaire and in-depth
interview and secondary data were gathered from various reputable sources like
journals, books, published and unpublished researchers, online papers, pamphlets and
articles. The study analyzed quantitative data by using SPSS version 16.0. The study
used content analysis to analyze qualitative data.
The study found that; manufacturing industry have impact to the employment
opportunities, innovation, contribution in Growth Domestic Product, revenue
collection, advancement in technology, poverty reduction as well as adding value to
agro business. The study found that manufacturing industry is facing various
challenges such as; oil prices, water and electricity supply, competition, lack of
enabling policy, challenge of exportation, transport network challenge and the
challenge in innovation and technology. The study found that manufacturing industry
lacks enough government support in terms of enabling policy, fair taxation, enough
water supplies, enough power supply, reliable transport network as well as fair trade
practice.
The study recommends that; the government should make efforts to speed up the
development of manufacturing industry andensure harmonization and coordination of
various policies for development. The government should also concentrate on
manufacturing industry sectorand make efforts on adding value to agricultural
products and also employ new production tactics. |
