Corporate play significant roles to improve the social welfares of the communities
besides making a profit out from them. As of this reason, many corporate companies in
recent years outline corporate social responsibility as one of the key goals they
attempt to achieve. This study attempted to assess the contribution of corporate social
responsibility towards the improvement of social welfare at Wazo ward deploying a
case study of Twiga Cement Company. It specifically aimed to determine
employees’ perception of corporate social responsibility, to establish the extent to
which corporate social responsibility contributed to community development and to
establish the link between corporate social responsibility and social welfare.
The study used both qualitative and quantitative design to collect, process, analyze
and present data. The study involved a sample size of 68 respondents who were
selected through purposive and random sampling methods. The findings of the study
reveal that that Twiga cement company is devoted to supporting the community by
engaging on the number of activities such as planting trees campaign with aim of
reducing negative impacts of the air and gases produced from the industry and as
well in the conservation of environment around the company. The company also has so
far initiated a number of programs and opportunities ranging from environmental
education and employment opportunities. Additionally, the findings show that the
company engages in supporting entrepreneur and disabled people and HIV victims to
the community nearby.
The study recommends for the government of Tanzania and responsible authorities to
ensure implementation of laws, acts and policies that guarantee Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) to the community. While there are clear policies that stipulate
the need for the company to engage on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to the
the community there seems to lack force in their implementation. It also recommends
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to put more emphasis on empowering the
local community by embarking on the provision of relevant skills and knowledge as
to secure jobs in companies present in their areas. |
