This study was conducted to assess on how female employees at the National
Insurance Corporation (NIC) develop their career along the gender-based challenges
they face. It was guided by three specific objectives namely to identify dedicated
programs to support short term and long-term training for women employees at NIC;
to investigate how women workers progress to management and leadership positions
at NIC; and to examine challenges faced by women employees in their career
development at NIC. Theories used to support the study were Self-Concept Theory
of Career Development and Theory of Vocational Personalities in working
environment.
The study used case study design to fill the study gap using the information gathered
from one setting. The primary data was collected through interview and
questionnaire instruments. The secondary data was collected through documentary
review where the information from organisation correspondences, management
reports, regulatory authorities, and online sources were collected and analysed. The
study was conducted in Dar es Salaam at NIC headquarters. The study selected 59
employees as a sample out of the population of 145 employees using non probability
sampling technique. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics such as
percentages, charts, and frequency tables. Qualitative data were analysed using
content analysis whereas they were narratively presented using themes to support the
results.
Findings revealed that several short term and long term programs were identified
with the short term including and long term programs to enhance women workers.
The study found further that there is the progress on women in leadership and career
whereby those performing well had been promoted on higher positions. The
implication of the results is that career development among female employees is
certain and they have the opportunity to excel and it is upon them to work hard and
perform on their positions for their career growth. |
