The study assessed the contributions of Bodaboda business on improving the
standard of living among youth in Tanzania: A case study of Ubungo district in Dar
Es Salaam. Specific research objectives: to identify the situation of Bodaboda riders
before and after they employed themselves in Bodaboda business, to assess how
Bodaboda business activities have contributed toward improving the welfare of
youth, to compare income-earning between Bodaboda owners and those who rent
Bodaboda to do business and to ascertain whether other income-generating activities
which emerged as the results of Bodaboda business activities. The Mixed research
methodologies were employed, in that regard, the case study design was used. The
unit of analysis was 71 Bodaboda business riders who were a member of a registered
association, while both primary data and secondary data were used. Then, interviews,
questionnaires, and document reviews were data collection techniques, which were
employed. Since the approach of the study was mixed, then the content/thematic
analysis was employed for qualitative data, whereas, Microsoft excel employed for
quantitative analysis. The study found, Bodaboda activities create employment
among youth in the study area, which has enabled them to earn income, accumulate
some assets, and access essential services such as health, education, fuel, market, and
water. Comparatively, it was found that those who own their motorcycles, have
higher income, use the motorcycle properly for their carrier prosperity as compared
to those who run motorcycles of their bosses. Also, the owner of a bodaboda was
found to have generated assets for themselves and their families from Bodaboda
business. The study concludes that bodaboda activity has reduced unemployment in
the study area, and is good for the youth. The study recommends the government to
provide funds to groups of youth to make sure that youth work very efficiently and
effectively.
