The aim of the study was to assess the effect of work-life balance on employee
retention at DSM Corridor Group Limited (DCG) in Tanzania. The motivation for
undertaking this study was a result of work-life balance gaps which has been persistent
not only within the Organizational environment of DCG but also affecting employees
in both the public and the private sector. In this contemplation, the study explored the
effects of work-life balance policies and structures on the retention of employees at
DCG, effect of management support on employee retention, examined the existing
organization practices pertaining to work-life balance at DCG, and determined the
effect of sustainability of work-life balance at DCG in Tanzania.
The study employed a qualitative research approach and used exploratory design. It
involved a sample size of 52 respondents who were selected through the purposive and
accidental sampling techniques. Primary data was collected through the use of
interviews and open ended questionnaires while secondary data was collected through
documentary review. Qualitative data was analysed through generating statistical data
through the use of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) data analysis tool
version 23, and the analysis was justified by drawing interpretations and conclusion in
relation to the study objectives. The analysed data were presented in tables.
The study has revealed that the organization comprises of several policies
corresponding to work-life balance which comply with the Employment and Labour
Relations Act 2004 on working hours, working days, annual leaves and employees’
entitlements. The management also possess high influence pertaining to employee
retention as a result of several motivation packages offered by the entity and several
other measures within the organization. In addition to that, the organization has been
positively assuring work-life balance presence through several practices which comply
with the labour laws. The implication of the results is that work-life balance does
indeed have a substantial effect on employee satisfaction if it is well managed in an
enterprise with administrative responsibilities to comply with labour and employment
laws.
