The use of electronic payment has marked an impressive growth worldwide with the
view to simplify and ease business transaction payments. Development in ICT is
attributed to this growth. The general objective of this study is to examine the factors
that influence the use of electronic payment systems among bank customers using
NMB bank as a case study. A cross-sectional mixed research design that includes
both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis techniques were
employed. The study was conducted in the Dar es Salaam region and a total of 250
bank customers were sampled conveniently. The study used a structured
questionnaire to collect the responses from the sampled customers. A total of 6 NMB
bank branches in Dar es Salaam were surveyed. The study employed a simple
multiple regression technique to analyze the factors that influence the use of the
electronic payment system among banking industry customers. The dependent
variable for this study was the use of electronic payment system. The independent
variables include; security-related matters and the ICT know-how. The control
variables include education, age, and experience. The study used SPSS version 20 for
the analysis. The findings revealed that ICT know-how has a positive significant
effect on the use of e-payment systems among bank customers. Furthermore,
security-related matters were observed to have a negative significant effect on the use
of the e-payment system among bank customers. Furthermore, findings revealed that
to improve the use of e-payment system banks need to provide education to the public
on the use of e-payment systems, promote internet banking, and improve TISS and
POS systems. Therefore, the study recommends that among other things banks need
to improve their e-payment security system to reduce the possible security challenges
to the customers. Also, the bank should improve the ICT technology that enhances
the e-payment services, need to improve the TISS and POS systems, and need to
educate more the public on the use of e-payment systems.
