Road transport play an important connecting role to global economic and social
development, in that regard we also recognize the significant contribution this sector
has toward successful realization of Sustainable development goals set by 2030. It is
evident that road transport can address issues of poverty and unemployment, can
supplement health system, agricultural development, facilitate labor movement, link
urban to rural and so forth. Regardless of all positivity, we can all agree that the
current drift in road transport business render it not to be sustainable. This study was
organized to assess the influence of road transport toward achievement of
sustainable development goals in Tanzania. Specific objectives used by researcher
were assessment of linkage between Road transport and sustainable Development,
Effects of Road transport toward achieving of sustainable development goals,
policies that governs road transport and lastly to measures to be taken to improve
transport sustainability. To add value in this study, the researcher consulted some
theories like Innovation diffusion theory (IDT) and theory of planned behavior
(TPB) supported with several empirical studies to make sense of the framework
used. This was case study research (one of the qualitative approach strategies)
carried out in Dar es Salaam Tanzania including selected transport stakeholders
mainly supply chain players. Data were analyzed using SPSS through factor
analysis. Results indicated that poverty reductions, reliable energy, industrialization
and climate change variables had a very strong linkage with road transport. Both
positive and negative effects were examined in the study and the results were
presented by uncovering a perfect correlation to support our variables suggesting
that road transport improve connectivity and facilitate labor movement. Regardless
of the irrelevance of some variables in our study, all the observed variables offered
sufficient explanations on the role that road transport can play toward achievement
of sustainable development goals that is set by 2030. Therefore, the outcomes Offer
insights to road transport stakeholders on their influence they have for the better
future of our community as well as Tanzania achieving the 2030 SDG’s. |
