The efforts to increase the number of health facilities available to the rural population. In this study was to find factors that limit health workers to provide quality of services. Although facilities exist and frequently supervised and staffs are motivated, the quality of care received by patients visiting government facilities is sub-standard. The objective of the study was to investigate the leadership styles applied by the health leaders and their relevance on improving performance of health workers. To investigate the types of motivation provided and their effectiveness on improving performance of health workers and to obtain suggestions for improvement that were help health workers to be motivated and performance at the work place. Research design and approach Qualitative research approach in this study was survey mainly used while some elements of quantitative research approach were complement it in order to get detailed understanding of the problem. The study was conducted in Nyamagana district in Mwanza region. Nyamagana and Sengerema districts are two of seven districts of Mwanza region in Tanzania. The main target population comprises of the medical practitioners in public dispensaries, health centers and hospitals in Nyamagana district. The sample of this study consists of 109 respondents that from all health facility levels non and probability sampling technical were used which are convenient sampling, purposive sampling technique, The methods used in data collection were interview, focus group discussion, documentary review and questionnaire, observation. The analysis was done through Microsoft excel qualitative information was subjected to content analysis technique. In this recommendation it is an important aspect of improving performance is the effective leadership skills to managers. Managers need to be oriented on mission and vision of the ministry of Health and Social welfare , Although there is limitation in the management style, the autocratic approach is still evidenced in health care today. In the current changing environment where the individual’s rights are recognised, it is important for the creation of an environment that enables participation in management and decision-making. It is also important for the leader to have some emotional commitment to staff, and encourage them to do their best. To this end leadership courses which discussed the different styles of leadership and their implications should be organised by the ministry of health to all health managers and health facility in charges.
