This was a cross-sectional analytical study aimed at assessing the prevalence of the use of banned cosmetics and associated factors among women attending hair dressing salons at Arusha Municipality.
Broad Objective
To determine prevalence of the use of banned cosmetics and associated factors among women attending Hair dressing salons at Arusha Municipality.
Method:
About three hundred and eighty four women participants attending different hair dressing salons at Arusha Municipality were interviewed by using structured guided questionnaires.
Both Qualitative and Quantitative methods of data collection were employed. Furthermore, Multi-stage sampling and purposive sampling technique were employed to obtain the participants. Therefore, women attending hair dressing salons at Arusha Municipality were interviewed through in-depth interview and guided interview.
Quantitative data were coded, and analysed using SPSS Version 13 while Qualitative data were analysed manually based on analytical frame work.
Results:
The overall prevalence of the use of banned cosmetics among women attending hair dressing salons at Arusha Municipality was high (72.4%). Factors such as socio – demographic factors, cultural factors and perception on skin colour tone as a symbol of beauty were identified to be influencing abuse of cosmetics.
Conclusion:
Abuse of cosmetics among women has got behavioural, socio-demographic, cultural and environmental determinants. The practice is based on many unfair problems and in the long term has very unfair and unhealthy results. The practice is becoming a public health issue as well as social and psychological problem that need immediate solution. Therefore this study is very crucial for the Government and other stakeholders to put in place proper measures to intervene.
