dc.description The study sought to investigate about community participation in enhancing the provision of basic education in public secondary schools in Tanzania: a case of Musoma District Council. It specifically aimed to find out how the community participates in enhancing the provision of basic education in public secondary schools in Musoma District Council, to identify the hindrances to community participation in enhancing the provision of basic education in public secondary schools in Musoma District Council and to establish the implications of community participation in enhancing the provision of basic education in public secondary schools in Musoma District Council. This study was guided by the Community Participation Theory and the Social System Theory. The study employed a mixed research approach, the approach which combined qualitative and quantitative techniques in a single study. The convergent parallel design was used. It was conducted in Musoma District Council where the targeted population was 9664. The sample size was 163. The study employed questionnaires and structured interviews to obtain both qualitative and quantitative information. Quantitative data was first coded using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 20 frequencies, percentages, and tables. Qualitative data obtained from interview was analyzed according to its categories and themes. The findings indicated that community participation is an important aspect for the development of education sector if it is well practiced and taken into effect. The community participates in some specific areas such as decision making, monitoring and evaluation, construction and infrastructure development programmes. The study found challenges such as lack of understanding of community participation, lack of community participation policy, reliance on the volunteers, ineffective representation of community groups, and the cultural belief of the community. On the implication of the community participation the study also revealed that where there is effective participation of the community in the provision of the basic education, there is improved teaching and learning environment, and ensured supervision of the school projects. Lastly the study recommended on enhancing community participation in the provision of basic education in Musoma District Council. The study established that educating community members, cooperation between school and communities, effective supervision of school community based projects as well as resolving cultural values can enhance the presence of effective community participation in the provision of basic education basically in Musoma District Council.
