This study investigated the factors contributing to truancy among students in Hanang
District Council. If truancy continues those students who left the school will eventually
engage in criminal activities like drug abuse and become thieves and robbers hence these
increases tension and fear among the society. More specifically, the study sought to
identify factors contributing to truancy and to find out the effects of truancy among
students in secondary schools. Additionally, the study explored possible strategies to
eradicate truancy among students in secondary schools. The study employed a mixed
research approach which adopted convergent parallel mixed research design. The
respondents of the study were 4 Heads of schools, 56 Teachers and 40 Students. Data was
collected through interview sand questionnaires. Quantitative data was analyzed through
descriptive statistics by using a Software Package for Statistical Science (SPSS) version
20. Thematic analysis was employed in analyzing qualitative data. The study found that
corporal punishment, long distance to walk to school and family responsibilities
contributed to truancy among students. The findings also indicated that truancy resulted
into use of drugs, increase of criminal acts and early marriage were the effects of truancy.
The study recommended that necessary efforts be made in ensuring conducive school
environment, such as; providing accommodation, counseling and guidance services and
parental involvement. The study has implication for government leaders, policy makers,
educators and parents in order to mitigate students’ truancy. |
